The mission of the Bayou Vermilion Preservation Association’s Water Quality Sampling Program is to monitor any changes in parameters sampled previously in the Vermilion and determine what those changes mean for the Bayou Vermilion.

This program is administered by an inter-governmental sampling team, including the Teche-Vermilion Fresh Water District (TVFWD) and Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG) who have elected to continue sampling indefinitely.

Teche-Vermilion Watershed Long-Term Water Quality Monitoring Program

The Teche-Vermilion Watershed Long-Term Water Quality Monitoring Program was started in 2014 with the goal of establishing baseline water quality data for the Teche-Vermilion Watershed. The BVPA formed a Technical Committee of dedicated water quality stakeholders and experts who wanted to document and understand the health of our watershed. This resulted in the development of a water quality monitoring program, where data collection and analysis provide real-time insight on regional waterways and how our community can use them.

How did the Water Quality Monitoring Program begin?

In 2014, after conferring with experts at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Teche Vermilion – Fresh Water District, and the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality(LDEQ) regional office, the sampling frequency was set to once a month. The now 25 sampling sites extend from the headwaters of the Teche-Vermilion Watershed and down each channel, with the Teche sampling ending downstream of New Iberia and the Vermilion sampling ending at the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. 

BVPA considers long term sampling and analysis.  The goal for all data collection is to capture quality evidence that allows analysis to lead to the formulation of convincing and credible answers to questions that have been posed. The question to be asked is this - what is the expected concentration of all of our measurables at one or more of the sampling sites throughout the year and what does it mean for the Vermilion?
 

What Does the Sampling Team Do? 

The Technical Committee established a sampling protocol that was straightforward and could be performed by any agency or personnel.  At least eight individuals from multiple agencies not only work a full day once per month collecting samples, but also label bottles, calibrate equipment, enter data, create graphs, and coordinate with the appropriate labs.  

The monitoring program started with nine sites and has since expanded to 25, which extend from the headwaters of the Teche-Vermilion down to the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. Sites were selected for accessibility while still representing the watershed tributaries, and parameters were based on water quality needs and impairments while not being overly burdensome on the part of the collector or the lab. Samples are collected by boat, sample ramps, and/or at bridges. 

In addition to date and time, the team records 6-meter reading parameters, 5 observations, take photos at each site and deliver the samples to an accredited lab for analysis for 6 additional parameters.  

The BVPA Technical committee meets monthly to review and discuss the results and submits a report to the BVPA Board.  We now have a very extensive and detailed record of water quality trends. Dr. Whitney Broussard, Coastal Ecologist, remarked that the program has shown that “a small group of dedicated individuals can in fact produce one of the most consistent, long-term datasets of water quality anywhere along the Northern Gulf of Mexico.”

BVPA identifies sample sites in various ways.  If the site is where a bridge crosses the river, the name of the road is used.  Nearby landmarks are also utilized.  BVPA, Teche Vermilion Freshwater District (TVFWD), and the T.E.C.H.E. Project collaborated with local agencies to install mile markers at 46 locations along the river.  They can be used to also identify sampling sites.

Conductivity as an indicator of salinity.

This graph illustrates Conductivity readings taken at the monitoring sites along the Vermilion, starting with the source water at the Atchafalaya River (left side of graph) downstream to the receiving waters at Vermilion Bay (right side of the graph). Because the Vermilion is vulnerable to saltwater intrusion, the conductivity readings fluctuate based on factors such as wind, tides, and rate of fresh-water flow.

Fecal coliform bacteria as an indicator of untreated waste entering streams.

Fecal Coliform bacteria are found in the feces of humans and other warm-blooded animals. There are natural sources of fecal coliform such as from birds and other wildlife who live in/near streams. High levels of fecal coliform bacteria can indicate the potential for disease causing pathogens due to sewage, pet poop, and manure are entering our waterways.
